Bridging Generations with Gentle Hearts: The Magic of Golden Visits

At Blue Iris Farm Rescue & Retreat, we believe that connection is a basic human need—but for many seniors in our community, that connection can become harder to find. Loneliness is a quiet epidemic among the elderly, and it is the heartbeat of our mission to change that.

This is why our Golden Visits program is, quite simply, my favorite thing we do here. It represents the core of why I founded Blue Iris Farm: to create a space where both animals and humans can find peace, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

What is a Golden Visit?

The "Golden" in our program refers to the golden years of life. We’ve designed these 2-hour immersive experiences specifically for senior centers and assisted living homes. We offer two ways to connect:

  1. A Farm Sanctuary Experience: Groups visit us here in Lebanon to experience the full scale of the farm—from the quiet majesty of our 2,200 lb draft horses, Whim and Dream, to the tiny, twitching noses of our baby bunnies.

  2. The Farm on Wheels: For those who cannot travel, we bring the magic to them! We pack up a "traveling barnyard"—usually a friendly goat and a cuddle of smaller friends like rabbits and guinea pigs—to visit their facility.

Going the Extra Mile: A Shoutout to Newtown Senior Center

The impact of this program is so powerful that distance is no barrier. We are always so moved by the dedication of the Newtown Senior Center out in Western CT. They have made the 1.5+ hour trip to visit us multiple times! Seeing their bus pull into the driveway is a highlight for everyone at the farm; it proves that the peace and healing found here are well worth the journey.

The Power of a "Nuzzle"

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when a senior looks into the eyes of an animal. We often see residents who have been quiet or withdrawn suddenly light up, sharing stories of the farms they grew up on or the pets they loved years ago. Whether it’s nuzzling with Love, our mini Highlander cow, or feeling the soft fur of a guinea pig, these tactile moments reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and, most importantly, provide a profound sense of companionship.

A Community Effort: Our Incredible Volunteers

Facilitating these visits is a true team effort. We are so lucky to have a diverse group of volunteers who make these connections possible:

  • Eastern Connecticut State University Students: Bringing energy and kindness to every visit.

  • Young Adult Services (YAS): Our amazing young adult volunteers with special needs who find the experience just as rewarding as the seniors do.

  • Local Girl Scout Troops: Who help us share the joy of the animals while learning the value of community service.

Watching a young volunteer gently place a rabbit in a senior's lap is a reminder that everyone has something to give. It is a beautiful cycle where the volunteers, the seniors, and the animals all walk away feeling seen and valued.

A Mission from the Heart

As the founder of Blue Iris Farm Rescue & Retreat, I see these visits as the ultimate expression of our sanctuary. We aren't just rescuing animals; we are inviting those animals to help "rescue" our community from isolation. Seeing the joy on a senior's face when they feel the steady presence of a horse or the playful spirit of a goat is a reminder that you are never too old to experience wonder.

How You Can Get Involved

Do you know a senior center or an assisted living facility that would benefit from some animal magic? We would love to host them at the farm or visit them on-site!

  • To book a visit: Head over to our Golden Visits page to learn more.

  • To support the program: As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we rely on donations to keep these programs accessible. You can view our Golden Visits Pamphlet or donate directly on our site to help us sponsor a visit for a local home.

Let’s keep bridging the gap, one nuzzle at a time.

With love and gratitude,

Jamie Founder, Blue Iris Farm Rescue & Retreat
